Holy Trinity RC Church looks to the heavens for its power |
The panels are on The Presbytery building next to Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church.
The parish priest, Father Michael O’Donoghue, hoped the panels would help to save money on energy bills.
“I have been trying to get a cheaper form of energy and had been looking at the possibility of utilising the power of the sun to generate electricity for the church and the house as well,” he said.
Father Michael said the panels were in the shape of a cross because it was a significant symbol for the building.
“I thought it was a good idea and the imagery wasn’t lost on me and I’m sure the sun would shine on it, whatever its shape,”
The panels were installed by Renergy Solutions in the shape of a cross Holy trinity RC church and they look great on the church roof.
“We have been asked to put them up in a square shape or a rectangle or to cover a roof, but never in a cross before.”
The panels will provide enough energy for the church and The Presbytery, and included a hot water system.
“They should be at the point where they have paid for themselves in six or seven years but it could be a shorter time with the extras in the system,”
